Keeping Your Dog Safe This Winter

882Winter is upon us once again and it’s time to start preparing for the dramatic weather changes that will soon occur. Just as you’ll have to take extra precautions in freezing cold temperatures, you should also take extra precautions to protect your dog from the harsh weather. This is one of the most important things you can do for him or her. Most breeds are not made to survive harsh winters outdoors. So it’s recommended that you keep your dog indoors for the majority of the season. If you are unable to keep your dog indoors, it is still possible to protect them from the cold. You will just need to invest in an insulated shelter for them. In order to make sure that it is properly insulated, there should be a door or a flap to prevent incoming drafts from entering. You will also need to put down some straw or hay for your dog to lie on. Do not use a fabric bedding, as it can easily get damp and freeze.

Dress your dog properly for outdoor excursions. You will still have to take your dog out regularly for exercise and bathroom breaks and you don’t want him or her to get too cold or even frostbitten. Investing in a winter coat or sweater is a good idea. This should be done especially for dogs that have shorter coats and all smaller dog breeds because they lose body heat faster than larger breeds. Also consider investing in some dog booties to protect your dog’s feet from harsh salt chemicals.
