There are other ways of training a dog to be obedient other than using physical force. If you want to reinforce good behavior, then you have to give your dog a reason for wanting to repeat that behavior. One way you can do this is by giving the dog praise after he or she has done something right. Giving them positive attention like this will make them feel good about what they have done and chances are they will want to repeat that action in order to get that kind of attention again. If you want to reinforce the good behavior a little more than with just the simple praise commands, you can add in a small treat once in a while. This is often a very good strategy as well as all dogs love treats.
If you’re having trouble with your dog and you’re just not sure what to do, try these few simple steps. When you see the negative behavior taking place, perhaps going to the bathroom in the house, try to intervene at the time it is occurring. When you catch your dog going to the bathroom in the house, lead them outside where they can finish the job and then reinforce that behavior with the praise tips mentioned above. Chances are this will not stop the problem the first time so you’ll have to repeat this a few times. Eventually your dog will learn that he or she is rewarded when they go outside instead of in the house.
